Monopoli is an old fishing village with some incredibly charming beaches.
The city is mostly known as an agricultural, industrial and tourist attraction. In comparison to the western side of Italy it retains its Italian old town sense and is reasonably unscathed by tourism. You are more likely to meet Italians on holiday here, rather than other Europeans.
Walking is, by far, without any reservation the best way of getting around the old city and its tightened and twisted roads. A car could be necessary if you’re planning on visiting the coast or the country side. From June to August, a bus service connects the train station to the several beaches at the south of city, for your convenience.
Monopoli boasts many beaches. There are both public beaches and private beach clubs available.
The views and beaches are simply remarkable and should be experienced by everyone at least once in their life.
There are many other tourist destinations in the area, including the Coastal Castle of St. Stephen, which was built by Lord Godfrey of Conversano in 1806. It was later turned into a Benedictine monastery. The Castle of Charles V was built in 1522, and is located on a peninsula that was originally separated from the medieval city. It was later restored and enlargened in the 17th century. In the 19th century it was actually used as a jail until 1969, afterwards becoming the venue for art exhibitions and other cultural events.
The city enjoyed a rather nice economic boost in the 1960s, partly in thanks to the opening of a Tognana industrial plant. When this plant closed close to the turn of the century, the city’s economic condition plummeted. Its local economy has once again seen a resurgence as new industries, most notably the MerMec, moved into the area.
The development of the city as a tourist destination the past few years has the Monopoli economy thriving once again.
The coast and country side are particularly popular destinations for holiday makers.
Bari is the closest airport and train interchange to Monopoli, and it is easiest to reach by car or train. The Bari Airport to Bari Train station is approximately 30 minutes, and the train from Bari to Monopoli takes another 30 minutes.
Monopoli has over 30 hotels and resorts that are highly rated and ready to please.
